Residence in a safe, stable and loving environment is offered as a long-term solution to children who cannot survive with community based care alone; once the children reside in the home they will continue to be cared for and financially supported until they are self-sufficient.
For severely malnourished children with serious health concerns we have a rehabilitation room for the caregiver and the child to stay up to one month; during this time they receive education on and support in the abovementioned topics.
For the HIV+ children and their caregivers we have set up a program that monitors each person’s health and response to therapy through monthly doctor’s consultations.
Through this program we provide children and their families with support in and counseling on basic needs, education, health care and nutrition.
The STARS stands for Support, Train and Advocate in Response to Stigmatization. The STARS is a youth-led initiative from children residing in the home. Our mission is to advocate for young people living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana to underline the importance of stigma reduction through peer-to peer education. We started this initiative in 2017 based on a successful project on World AIDS Day 2017. A speech on HIV/AIDS and stigma was delivered to 12 different school. In 2018 we expanded our program with a drama play and speech to 7 different schools, churches and a mosque. The members received a PhotoVoice training in 2019. PhotoVoice is a tool that provides a visual representation of key aspects related to stigma. The personal stories of the members are told through the pictures they made, based on a designed research question the group created together. Selected pictures are exhibited on various Senior High schools in the Volta Region.
